The Bridgeland Educational Village in Cypress, Texas

In most public school districts, elementary, middle and high schools are buildings separated by distance, and ideology. But in the Houston suburb of Cypress, Texas, leaders from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District had a different vision. Instead of thinking about schools as separate campuses, the district wanted to build an elementary, middle and high school on a  single site, to create a learning community where students at all grade levels could learn from each other, and grow together.

That vision became reality in the fall of 2017, when the Bridgeland Educational Village opened. As the educational designers of the Village, the team at the Texas Studio of IBI Group wanted to tell the story behind this signature project.

We are proud to be a long-time storytelling partner to the Learning + practice of IBI Group and were excited to bring this latest chapter of the firm’s education design story to life.

What We Learned
Out of town assignments like this one require extensive planning and logistical work. In preparation for our five days of filming in Houston, we conducted extensive story planning and development, pre-interviews via phone, developing shot lists, as well as working remotely with a Houston-based drone company to plan specific aerial shots of the campus.

Our prep work helped us understand the “what” of our story: a rapidly growing school district that needed to build schools to accommodate large numbers of students. Once we arrived in Houston, embedded ourselves on the campus, and started talking to teachers, the design team, and district leaders, we understood the “why” of the story: to create a series of neighborhood schools that are connected by a common purpose: to create an engaging and exciting environment that would encourage collaboration and camaraderie among students from pre-kindergarten to high school.
